Carved panels for Fort George

This was another great honour for me. I was approached by the trustees of Fort George to carve some panels for their chapel. Fort George is an 18th Century fort standing on a promontory that juts into the Moray Firth near Inverness. Although built following the Jacobean uprising of 1745, it is still a military base toady and my father was stationed there in my childhood. I have great memories of visiting him at the fort and playing in the battlements. The panels feature honours to former officers of my father’s regiment The Gordon Highlanders as well as the Seaforth and Cameron Highlanders.

There were some existing honours panels within the chapel that I had to try and emulate. This was quite tricky as the previous carver had their own ideas about typography. Once I had nailed the type, I then had to carve into the panels. This wasn’t easy either as we hadn’t been initially aware that they are just 12mm ply! Once the carving was completed I had to gild the lettering with 24 carat gold leaf. The panels are now proudly on display in the fronts of the pews in Fort George chapel.
