A great honour

I was thrilled to be approached by my friends and neighbours at Glenfarclas Distillery recently. They asked me if I would produce a unique presentation case for a very special bottle of whisky. Glenfarclas have very generously been donating to the Distiller’s One-of-One charity for several years, and I was asked to create a unique case for the 2025 auction.

My brief was to create a “rustic” looking box for a very special gallon bottle of 58 year old Glenfarclas Highland Malt Whisky. Callum, the distillery manager at Glenfarclas, asked if I could make the box out of a local tree trunk. Sadly, due to likelihood of a box like that cracking over time, I emulated a tree trunk by laminating 8 oak boards together. I then got about carving it into a rounded, trunk shape.

Glenfarclas is a gaelic name meaning “the glen of the green grass”. This inspired the celtic knotwork design of grasses at the base. I’ve also hand-carved the Glenfarclas logo as well as the logo for the Distiller’s charity at the top.

There is a lid with a wooden hinge and a hand-carved handle. Inside the box the 1 gallon bottle sits on a cushion made from Glenfarclas Grant tartan.

The auction will be held in Edinburgh in October 2025, run by Sotheby’s.
