This was a lovely project to work on. I was approached by the owners of an 18th century former tax house in Glen Avon to produce a house sign for the property. Some time ago when previous owners were redeveloping the property, they lifted a number of large stone slabs from the old kitchen floor. These measured up to nearly a meter across and turned out to be Knockfergan (Cnoc fergan) slates from the nearby abandoned quarry. One slab in particular stood out for us while we were inspecting them. Parts of the front face had fallen away leaving an outline looking like a mountainous outline. We could be forgiven for seeing a resemblance to nearby Ben Rinnes. I simply added in some carvings of valleys to cement the idea. The typeface was chosen as it echoes inscriptions on headstones in the nearby Kirkmichael graveyard. The sign was then installed in the beautiful dry stone wall created by local stone dyker, Euan Thompson.
